What to Do Right After a Collision

A calm, clear approach when the unexpected happens.

Accidents are never part of the plan. But when they happen, knowing how to respond can make the experience far less stressful. Whether it's a minor scrape or a more serious crash, having a plan helps you stay focused and take control of the situation.

Here’s what to do if you’ve just been in a collision.

Step 1: Check for Injuries and Stay Safe

Take a moment to check yourself and any passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately.

If your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to move, pull over to the shoulder or a nearby parking lot. Use your hazard lights to alert other drivers. If the vehicle is not safe to move, remain inside with your seatbelt on and wait for help.

Step 2: Call the Police

Even if the accident seems minor, calling the police is usually a smart step. A formal report can help with insurance claims and provide documentation of the incident. Once officers arrive, explain what happened clearly and factually. Be sure to request a copy of the report or a report number before leaving the scene.

Step 3: Exchange Information

You’ll want to collect the following details from the other driver:

  • Name and phone number

  • Driver’s license and license plate numbers

  • Insurance provider and policy number

  • Vehicle make, model, and color

Keep the conversation brief and focused. Avoid placing blame or admitting fault, as this will be reviewed later by insurance adjusters.

Step 4: Take Photos

Photos provide an objective record of the damage and the scene. Capture:

  • All areas of visible damage on both vehicles

  • The full scene, including road conditions, signage, and vehicle positions

  • Any skid marks or debris

  • Close-ups of license plates and VINs (if accessible)

This documentation is helpful for your insurance provider and the repair shop.

Step 5: Notify Your Insurance Company

Call your insurance carrier as soon as possible to report the accident. Share the facts, provide any photos or documentation, and be prepared to answer questions. Some providers may require an inspection before authorizing repairs.

Step 6: Bring Your Vehicle to a Trusted Body Shop

You’re not required to use the shop recommended by your insurer. You can choose a repair facility that aligns with your standards for quality and service.

At Elevated Auto Body, we’ll take it from here. From handling communication with your insurance provider to performing thorough, precise repairs, we manage the process with care and professionalism. You’ll always know where your vehicle stands and what to expect next.
